First, I disagree that "MAGA" ever had an opportunity to do any such thing. MAGA is about restoring us to the 1950s. That great post war moment, with America's industrial might on full display, when the under-educated could count on a nice high paid blue collar job, and in their minds, bequeath it to their sons. It was always about stoking anger and bitterness about a lost past, and never about moving into a future which is coming whether we like it or not. So Trumpism, and MAGA, were never anything more than a backlash against a lost past.

And my other nit is with the notion, that I think you suggest, that govt couches these things as anything at all to get our private sector to respond. Basically, the free market does that. The information age was not unleashed because govt painted Japan as a threat we need to galvanize against. Quite the opposite - the Cold War threat disappeared, and the "internet" as we know it was born, because it was no longer a classified national defense asset.

The information age was unleashed because govt got out of the way. Just as it won't be govt determining how the future looks. I am about as close to 100% confident as I can be that it won't be this doomsday scenario of 99% of humanity sitting around with nothing to do and no resources to buy anything.
